Home repair question....I own my home and my sliding glass doors are in need of replacement.?

The windows are foggy as a result. I was told when I originally purchased my home that I would only need to replace the glass within the door, however, I was informed by a contractor today that I should replace the entire door because this would be the most efficient choice. I have three sets of sliding glass doors and cannot afford to replace all the doors at once, but would like to take advantage of the tax credit which ends this year. I would greatly appreciate any advice on this matter.

Hi Jenn,
I agree with your contractor, replacing the entire door is correct. The quality of slider doors made today are far more effificient. In thinking through your question I suggest that you 'prioritize' which one will need to be done first.
Considering your finances, is there any way that you could obtain a 12 month Interest Free Credit card with either Lowe's or Home Depot. Purchase all 3 doors, finance your payment x 12 months @ 0 interest make your monthly payments. Once your tax credit check is available pay off your balance in advance of the 12 months.
Contractor, are you able to negotiate a fee for the installation of 3 doors than the installation of one door? This too, will save you money.Just have to add , but make sure you do have a repituable contractor working on your home.
Lastly, what may seem to be 'out of budget costs' right now, with a bit of creative financing on your part, will also save you money in the cost of your fitire utilities bills. And saving utilities costs far outlast the yearly tax credit.
If you truly can not afford all three doors, I would go back to my first suggestion and prioritize which door you should replace due to heat loss etc. A fogged window view can always be covered with sheer curtains that allows light and blocks any unsightly views, until you can afford to replace all .
Good Luck!
